Polydor Records Visit

We had a visit from two video commissioners from Polydor in this visit we learned directly from industry professionals about how the music industry works and the day to day running's of such a profession.

Everyday they meet artists and directly find out what type of music video they want to do and how they want it done to be in keeping with there star image be it synthetic or organic. Some artists have a clear and concise idea about how they want there music video to be done and for other artists they walk in with just a budget and a song.

The commissioners then have to research and find out exactly what the artist represents because if they pitch a treatment that is not accurately made to portray there image then it is back to the drawing boards and this would be a grave waste of time.

A treatment is a comprehensive breakdown of: the style, the narrative and and contains links to movie clips, photos and other media that will help them convey there idea to the artist.

The purpose of the treatment is to let everyone be on the same page and to allow them to share the same vision and to make it achievable.

After the treatment has been pitched and amended they will draft up a shot list possibly with the addition of a detailed plan of the cutting for post production work, this can make the job for the editor very easy and sometimes boring as it takes away there level of control.

After the idea has been fully processed and approved a director will be called up and they will arrange most of the rest including editors, crew and all the other responsibilities to get the video created. And at this stage the commissioners are working more as a middle man between the artist and the director.

Normally a typical shoot will take only one single day, this is done to reduce production costs. These tight constraints bring a lot of pressure and it is essential to ensure that everything is planned before hand and that a backup option is ALWAYS available so that the video can be created no matter what. If a video is shot abroad then it is likly that it will be shot over two half days so that the artist is in there best state of mind and also so they can relax.

Often music videos are shot in Ukraine due to the lack of travel restrictions and lenient health and safety legislation making videos more achievable to shoot.

Usually a whole production team will go abroad because of the wide array of talent available.

It is often hard to estimate a definite budget because things can change and extra charges often occur. The smallest budget they have had to work with was £5,000 but this is unusual as costs usually surpass this.
